Whatever is beneficial to YOU, to YOUR psyche, to YOUR well-being is part of self-care.

So, why is self-care important and why shouldn’t it be neglected for fear of being seen or even portrayed as selfish?

When we take care of ourselves first, we are inevitably able to better care for those around us too.

Yet, another highly important point, that shouldn’t be neglected, is that self care is of great value to your mental health.

I suffer from anxiety and with everything that goes on in my life, and that is happening in the world, I can sometimes feel really overwhelmed.

I need a time-out. That time-out comes in the form of self-care. If I am unable to take care of myself, my mental health takes a nose-dive. And there is no way that ends prettily!

So, whatever self-care you indulge in, it will appease your soul and make you much more available for yourself, your loved-ones, friends, and even your colleagues!

What You Can Do When Your Emotions Have A Mind Of Their Own

Every once in a while, I have moments of severe emotional overwhelm, and I am definitely not the sole exception!

2020 has been one helluva year.

As we begin the new year, no matter how lucky I know I am, I have my moments where my mind will just act on its own accord.

I will enter the troubled-maze, and all capacity to think rationally, goes *POUF* – gone into the world of the unknown!

The absolute must when you are feeling overwhelmed is to try and pin-point what is actually making you feel that way.

Oftentimes, we feel like this after a traumatic event, but it can also be from relationship issues and, more often than not, stress.

Most individuals will feel overwhelmed by negative emotions such as anger, fear or guilt.

What Are The Signs You Are Emotionally Overwhelmed?

Besides the fact that you are ready to rip into someone or cry all the tears of your body, at the drop of a hat? Joking aside, the signs that you are emotionally overwhelmed will appear when you are no longer capable of managing the intensity of your feelings.

The most common signs are:

What Are The Causes of Emotional Overwhelm?

No matter where we are at in our lives, we will all feel this emotional instability and overwhelm at one time or another.

As stated before, it oftentimes stems from one big stressor – a traumatic event.

Yet, you can also feel like the world is caving in on you, when smaller incidents pile up to make it a giant tower of “too much”.

Imagine you are having some sort of relationship issue (work or personal), you are running late because you haven’t slept, due to that relationship problem, and you have absolutely NFI where you placed your glasses.

You know that if you don’t find them, your day will be shot and you also know that if you are not out your door in 20 seconds, you will miss the last train for work!

So, you misplacing your glasses may actually be the last straw and you completely lose it!

Each person will deal with emotional overwhelm differently. The same goes for what emotions are better dealt with each individual. You may be better at dealing with anger, rather than extreme sadness or guilt.

If you have conflicting feelings at the same time, you will probably feel emotional overwhelm.

It goes without saying that if you no longer know how to manage these emotions or that tiny issues trigger your emotional overwhelm, consulting your therapist or contacting one, will undoubtedly be of great help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness!

What Are The Consequences of Emotional Overwhelm?

The biggest consequence of emotional overwhelm is you not taking care of yourself.

When you are not taking care of yourself, you may be losing sleep, skipping meals or not taking a much needed time-out. In turn, this inevitably leads to you being irritable and you may say or do something you regret.

Not being aware that self care is essential, opens you up to irrational behavior, making it even harder to cope with emotional overwhelm.

If you are not looking after yourself, you end up in a negative cycle that has repercussions on your physical and mental health.

That’s why taking time out in your day for yourself, no matter how insanely busy you are, is primordial and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

My anxiety is something I struggle with everyday, so I know what it’s like to tether on the edge of emotional overwhelm.

I know how difficult it is to take time just for myself. Yet in order to counter these moments of disequilibrium, I need my daily dose of self care and my mental health pretty much demands it (and depends on it)!

Below are a few of the activities I have found to help regain my balance and that do wonders to maintain a grasp on any form of emotional overwhelm. These are my personal blissful moments, and I know these are not one-size-fit-all, however keeping an open mind and taking in ideas, is surely a positive step.

These are hopefully going to do wonders for helping you keep track of your emotional overwhelm, as well as your mental health.

THE TOP 5 BLISSFUL MOMENTS THAT ARE HELPING MY MENTAL HEALTH

Absolute blissful moment #1:

That moment you can just wash all the gunk, accumulated during the day, off your face.

I am a double-cleanse kinda gal. I know that some of you may not particularly like the fact that it is an oil, but trust me, this one is super light!

When I want to indulge and feel like I’m at a spa, I always always start off by using my trusty Pai Rosehip Cleansing Oil .

Then, I use my normal cleanser to really get a good final wash.

I have normal to combination skin, sometimes it can get a little sensitive, even though I can use pretty much use anything, without fear of breaking out or having any reaction a product.

I do have a preference for:

Eau Thermale Avene Antirougeurs Refreshing Cleansing Lotion

Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser

COSRX Low pH Good Morning Cleanser

And when I truly need to indulge, I’ll use another favorite of mine, Turmeric Brightening & Exfoliating Maskby Kora Organics. It’s normally an exfoliating mask, but I sometimes use it every other day, when my skin is as crazy as the world is at the mo’!

The whole process of washing my face is actually very soothing and it could be likened to a cleansing of the soul! Of course this is my personal opinion, but when you are taking care of yourself, you really are reconnecting with your soul.

Absolute blissful moment #2:

As crazy as it seems my other blissful moment is lifting weights!

I know right? Who in their right mind actually likes to do such a thing?! Well, I can tell you that being active is definitely something I am doing to keep sane. I joined Aaptiv a few years back, and it is the most awesome fitness application! I used to go into a gym, and use it whilst on the treadmill. As soon as the longer and warmer days were here, I would prefer to go outside. I’d still use the application though.

With the pandemic, and especially during our first strict lockdown, I used it everyday. I even got my little one to participate in some meditation and yoga classes.

It is part of my self care routine now to use the application and get some activity done!!

If you are looking to get back in shape and go at your own pace, then Aaptiv is seriously worth checking out here.

Absolute blissful moment #3:

Get that messy corner cleared and sparkling!

There are times when, even I feel overwhelmed and have absolutely no idea where I am heading, I take a big breath and do some decluttering! I know, I know, it seems completely irrational to find solace in decluttering my space.

However, I figured that when I tackle that messy corner, which inevitably stresses me out, and adds to the overwhelm, and get it cleared up and tidy again, my mind is much more at ease.

20 minutes is all it takes for you to regain control and feel much more appeased!

Why not take a photo before you tidy and take one after? The sense of accomplishment is blissful!!

I love Cluttered Mess to Organized Success Workbook! It seriously has everything you need, when you are totally feeling overwhelmed and just need that extra push in the right direction. Plus, the worksheets are SO pretty!!

I also love how Cassandra is extremely honest about her mental health and her tips are super comprehensible AND the items she mentions are very affordable.

Definitely worth checking out!

Absolute blissful moment #4:

I’ve been keeping tabs on my water intake.

We all know that 60% of our body weight is water and that staying hydrated has numerous health benefits. Yet, this simple act has a tendency to be forgotten and overseen, especially when we are stupidly busy!

According to this Harvard School of Public Health study, women should be drinking at least 11 cups of water a day!

To ensure that this is met, I have this new little trick (that isn’t really new, but works wonders!).

Every couple of hours I fill up my Qwetch bottle, if I am at home. If I get up and it’s not been emptied, I drink up and then refill! It makes a lot of water to drink, but seriously, it makes me feel so good!! I also love this Chilly Stainless Steel one.

If I am out and about, I will carry around my big AF 32 oz. water bottle, as I can’t refill it every couple of hours, however it does ensure that I am staying hydrated, throughout the day.

Absolute blissful moment #5:

I have been a lot more consistent in my journal writing.

Recently, I discovered a new notebook in which I have been enjoying writing in.

Journaling has been omni-present in life, since my 13th Birthday, when my Dad brought back a journal, which started my journaling journey. We all know the benefits of journaling and how it can really help pivot your mindset.

However, with the current shift of the world, due to this health pandemic, I hadn’t been super pro-active in my journaling. I didn’t feel like doing much to be honest, so I was giving journaling a break.

I soon realized that this was a monumental mistake, because my escape has always been in writing, and I didn’t have that anymore and was choosing to do other things, which in hindsight were not that useful!!

As soon as I started taking that time to write and to just lay my thoughts down, I truly felt a shift in my mindset. I wake up in the morning with intent and feel super productive once I have taken that time for myself!

Erin Condren has the prettiest notebooks, journals and accessories.

The one I have been using is the Designer Softbound Notebook, with a Kaleidoscope Colorful Design.

Her wellness planner is also bomb and definitely worth having a look at. It is super handy, by its size as well as by its contents. With its 6 tabs and easy to navigate pages, it has become a favorite to keep track of my self care routine.

But if you want something different, I highly suggest Michelle Obama’s Journal. It has beautiful paper quality and the thought and detail gone into it is great. Her little suggestions to prompt you to write are super efficient and useful as well!

If you are just starting out on your journaling adventure, I have a free HABIT JOURNAL printable that you can download now, and which will get you started on your journey.

The Takeaway

So what is this global pandemic teaching me about myself?

I have learned that no matter how emotionally overwhelmed I am feeling, just by taking a few minutes out of my schedule, helps. Even if it is to open a window and get some fresh air.

As an anxious person, I tend to accumulate stress and one of the manners in which I have learned to evacuate this stress is by practising self care.

Self Care really is my bubble of oxygen and my gateway to being calmer, more present in the moment and a stress reliever!

Emotional overwhelm shouldn’t dictate the way you live or act. It is something that we have to learn to subdue and master. It’s not easy, and definitely won’t happen overnight, yet by finding what works for you to conquer your emotional overwhelm, you are on your way to a healthier mindset and you are taking hold of your mental health.

I hope you enjoyed these little tips and maybe you have your own specific ways you are handling your mental health during this global pandemic.
