How are you doing today?

I hope you enjoyed the penultimate piece of this fascinating topic RESILIENCE.

We have now come to the last part and I am so happy that you have been looking forward to the various pieces of the puzzle coming together, and that you have been telling me you have learned new things along the way.

In my last post, which you can find here, I wrote about how to encourage resilience in children and today I wish to go over another point that I find interesting in this vast topic of resilience, and that is GENDER.

Does the fact that you are a woman or a man, influence your chances of being less or more resilient?

I mainly concentrated my readings on how resilience affected women.

Let me try and answer that question, with the help of an article published in January 2018 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The article states that regarding survival and longevity, women historically thrive in greater numbers than men, during times of crisis such as famines and epidemics. (Side note, good to know for the current situation y’all!!)

Even when overall life expectancy rose, researchers found women outlived men between six months and four years.

From what I have read, resilience benefits both men and women when facing challenges and adversity.

However, women also draw on resilience to overcome obstacles more often placed in their way, such as job discrimination, sexual harassment, and domestic violence.

Another study found that when confronted with gender bias in the workplace, women relied on adopting male characteristics, mentoring, intrinsic motivational factors, as well as their femininity to work through obstacles.

Isn’t that insane? One, we have to dig deep into our resilience because of what others do to us and put in our way, AND we have to be someone we are not to ensure our safety is not compromised …

Mind blown? Yeah, so was mine!!

This point totally requires a little more digging on your part, if you are interested, as there really is a plethora of knowledge out there.
